What are the requirements to apply for citizenship in the UK?

  • Applicant must be free from immigration control and hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card conferring Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or permanent residence in the UK for at least 12 months before applying. If you are married to a British National however you do not have to wait 12 months.
  • Applicants are required to demonstrate that they satisfy the requirements for sufficient knowledge of life and language in the UK. So you must have passed the B1 CEFR level English language exam and the Life in the UK test to apply for citizenship in the UK.
  • All applicants must demonstrate that they satisfy the good character requirements by demonstrating that they do not have any criminal convictions, civil judgments, speeding fines or other adverse credibility findings in their record.
  • You must also satisfy the residence requirements so that you have not left the UK for substantial periods of time (2 years) and have not had excessive absences from the UK. Routes for immigration to the UK:
  • If you are born after 1st January 1983 in the UK and at least one of your parents is a British citizen, you can apply for British citizenship.
    • Children under 18 can apply to register as British Citizens as minors at the discretion of the Secretary of State if their application is otherwise to be refused.
    • Stateless individuals are also applicable. If your state is not recognised officially, the applicant is eligible to apply for British citizenship.
    • After 5 years of residency in the UK, you can directly apply for citizenship.
    • If the applicant has given up his/her nationality for the UK, he/she is eligible to resume his/her status.
